One possibility for creating innovations is to actively involve external problem solvers in the innovation process. Thus, there is the chance to benefit from their innovative abilities, knowledge and creativity. One method for realising such open innovation processes is the use of innovation contests. It can take place in business practices as well as in field of university research. The presented paper deals with the influences of personality traits in open innovation processes especially innovation contests. The questions are how an innovative respectively creative person can be characterised and to what extent the personality of participants in innovation contests does influences their participation activities. This article contains six sections, beginning at the brief introduction, going to the theoretical foundations and continuing with presentation of the research methods and the empirical field. The next section contains information about innovative personality and connections between creativity as an aspect of personality in open innovation processes as well different characteristics for creativity. To conclude the article, there is presented a brief discussion and future research tasks. The main findings of this article are the following: Participants in innovation contests can be characterized and distinguished with different aspects, like their knowledge, their activity or creativity. Furthermore, there were found different possibilities to classify them depending on their personality respectively creativity and activity in innovation contests. Some of the personality traits have a clear positive or negative context with the innovative acticity, like openness to new experiences or creativity during the stages of the idea generation. The influences of other personality traits are disputed. There were gained different aspects of creativity through the empirical field of an innovation contest. Therefore, the self-evaluations of the participants were analysed. Thus, the indication that only creative people generate innovative ideas is partly confirmed.
